Why We Like It

At her deeply personal Dogpatch place, chef-owner Heena Patel offers a menu of vibrant, immensely varied specialties from her home state of Gujarat, inspired by her childhood memories and family recipes. A selection of housemade chutneys and pickles amps up the flavors even more.

About Besharam

In Gujarati families, food is never just food. It’s stories, opinions, second helpings, and someone insisting you haven’t eaten enough. This menu is a collection of memories, cravings, and flavors that followed Chef Heena Patel from Gujarat to San Francisco—street-food adventures, family recipes passed down through generations of women, and a few dishes born simply from asking, “What happens if I try this?” Besharam means “shameless,” and it felt like the perfect name for a restaurant built on cooking without apology. As you turn these pages, you’ll travel through three chapters inspired by Gujarat’s spirit: Community, Abundance, and Resilience—a celebration of the people, places, and traditions that shaped this journey. Take your time, order generously, and pass the chutneys.

Mirroring the creative spirit of the Minnesota Street Project, Besharam features custom artwork from HateCopy pop artist Maria Qamar, who depicts the life and times of the first generation Desi diaspora in her pieces.
