Dallas
Lucia
Bib Gourmand | Dallas
Renowned for its refined, inventive Italian fare, husband-and-wife owners David and Jennifer Uygur have created one of the city’s most beloved restaurants. Pastas are made by hand each day and meats are cured in-house, while a list of Italian-leaning wines brims with generosity.
Nonna | Tabu
Bib Gourmand | Dallas
Located on the edge of Highland Park in Dallas, Nonna plates up inventive Italian dishes with a focus on local and organic produce. Many dishes are kissed by a roaring wood-burning oven (which also turns out immaculately charred pizzas), while a rotating list of pastas and antipasti keeps regulars and newcomers alike on their toes.
Austin
Odd Duck
Bib Gourmand | Austin
An early adopter of the farm-to-table ethos in Austin, Odd Duck’s menu reads like a diary of its chef’s travels while rooting itself firmly in Texas. Dishes are designed to be shared, and diners can expect anything from an antelope tostada or cast-iron cheddar cornbread to stuffed quail with masa and salsa verde. The dining room is as energizing as it gets, while the best seats are at the bar to watch the chefs at work.
Dai Due
Green Star + Bib Gourmand | Austin
At this East Austin institution, almost everything is sourced from within the Lone Star state, which chef Janie Ramirez transforms into classic Southern dishes with a twist. Take a seat inside its farmhouse-inspired dining room and feast on dishes prepared in the kitchen’s wood-fired oven, like chicken hearts with spicy cherry glaze or a fortifying plates of biscuits and gravy with a breakfast sausage made from antelope that the restaurant’s chefs broke down earlier in the week.
Nixta Taqueria
Green Star + Bib Gourmand | Austin
Chef Edgar Rico and his team knock it out of the park at this gloriously colorful taqueria-plus, with housemade tortillas (using heritage corn from Oaxaca) for his duck confit tacos, roasted carrot tostadas, and other unexpected but spectacularly successful riffs on Mexican traditions.
Houston
Le Jardinier – Houston
★ | Houston
Michelin-starred chef Alain Verzeroli, who perfected his craft under renowned chefs Alain Passard and the late Joël Robuchon, leads the kitchen at this Museum District institution. The restaurant’s name means “the gardener” in French, so it’s only appropriate that the spotlight here is on farm-fresh produce and herbs, with sustainably- and locally-sourced fish and meat in supporting roles. The artfully plated dishes — with vibrantly-hued ingredients arranged with meticulous precision — are masterpieces in their own right.
Blood Bros. BBQ
Bib Gourmand | Bellaire
Blood Bros. redefines barbecue in the most delicious ways. The menu changes often, and the team — brothers Robin and Terry Wong and pitmaster Quy Hoang — surprise and delight with unexpected offerings. Expect inventive offerings like brisket fried rice, smoked pork and kimchi egg rolls, or burnt ends with gochujang.
Annam Vietnamese Restaurant
Bib Gourmand | Houston
This sleek Vietnamese restaurant in Autry Park may tout French influences, but is delightfully grounded in the flavors of the Southeast Asian nation. Creative touches punctuate an intimate meal here, from crispy bánh xèo bites and a steamed branzino which comes wrapped in banana leaf and is theatrically served tableside.
Da Gama
Bib Gourmand | Houston
This isn’t your typical Indian restaurant — or your typical Portuguese one, either — and that’s what makes Da Gama special. Here, husband-and-wife restaurateurs Shiva and Rick Di Virgilio feature the dishes of former Portuguese colonies in India and East Africa, and the culture-blending results (see the Goan fish curry) are vivid and delicious.
Nancy’s Hustle
Bib Gourmand | Houston
Combine a cozy bistro feel, serious natural wines, and chef Jason Vaughan’s wildly inventive cuisine, and you get Nancy’s Hustle, an EaDo fixture and a critically-acclaimed dining destination.
Theodore Rex
Bib Gourmand | Houston
Justin Yu, formerly of Oxheart — Houston’s lauded gem — ditched his fine dining outlook for something a bit more casual. The result is Theodore Rex, a contemporary bistro built upon an obsession with hyper-seasonal Texas ingredients. Menus are “subject to change on a daily basis due to availability, quality or boredom” — so you know you’re in good hands.
